This session will explore a creative approach to planning environments that support authentic learning, both within and beyond the school site. Participants will learn how student’s interests can serve as a catalyst for their career pathways, and how a rich combination of public spaces, civic organizations, businesses, adult mentors, and other community assets can support the creation of more personalized, integrative and cost effective environments for learning. The session will also unpack a variety of roles that constituents throughout the learning community can play in the design and delivery of creative and systemic learning environments that thrive within a compelling mix of physical, cultural, social, economic, organizational and educational elements. Another important feature of the event will be an honest dialogue with students, as well as with high ranking officials from the California Department of Education, about its innovative new $500 million Career Pathways Trust program that is currently in the implementation phase. The event will be organized in a "workshop" format, with all participants contributing their ideas and expertise in different ways. Contemporary "crowd sourcing" techniques and methodologies will be used to harvest concrete outcomes where they can be reported in real time as well as in future publications.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn about methodologies for curriculum and instruction that follows students’ interests.
  2. Participants will learn about the California Pathways Trusts new $500 million career pathways program. High ranking officials of the program will be available to present and answer questions.
  3. Participants will experience first hand and learn how to their ideas and opinions can be assimilated into research outcomes using crowdsourcing methodologies.
  4. Participants will learn about new approaches to the planning and design of learning environments, including school facilities.
